020: Tough Conversations with good friends: Part 2 - Miscarriage Guilt
Apr 29, 2021 Season 1 Episode 20
Laura Vidunas and Erica Ecker

This topic in our series of tough topics with good friends is one that’s sensitive and we want to share our stories to bring more normalcy to the conversation. We are talking about infertility and miscarriages.

When the question “Oh when are you getting married” suddenly becomes “when are you having kids?” There's never a great way to answer. We both knew we wanted to have kids but have ended up in different places, and now that we are past of life, we wanted to share our journeys in order to tell a different version of fertility and pregnancy than what is normally told - the grin and bear it response when someone asks how things are going.

This is a sensitive and difficult process for many more people that usually goes undiscussed. As a way to support to those going through their own ups and downs, we are opening up about the difficulties, misinformation, and emotions we went through. And then finally offer some support tools and advice that we’d impart to those who want to be a good friend to someone who has or is going through this. Just need as a disclaimer these are our experiences and we are sharing our personal thoughts and opinions on this topic

Erica shares her story about miscarriage.

What helped?

  • Yoga, quieting the mind and having time to think and process
  • Journaling - writing down the gory details
  • Talking to close, trusted family members that helped me understand that it wasn't my fault
  • Time passing
  • Understanding the stages of loss
    • Shock and denial
    • Anger and guilt
    • Depression and despair (especially when other people are having kids, seemingly easily)
    • Then acceptance
  • Knowing that this to will pass
